Transportation Tunnel linking Europe and Asia opens in Turkey

The first underwater tunnel linking the European continent with Asia has been opened in the city of Istanbul, Turkey.

Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan officially opened the Eurasia tunnel which is the first of its kind and will see a direct link from Turkey to Asia.

The transportation tunnel which has been designed to accommodate cars and small buses was also built to curb the notorious traffic jam in Istanbul.

The Prime Minister of Turkey, Binali Yildrim expressed his delight at completing the project, adding that it was one of the country's greatest dreams. He made this statement at the official opening ceremony of the tunnel.

The Eurasia tunnel which took over five years to construct is a 14.5km (9miles) route. A 5.4km section of the route was built under the Bosphorus strait. The Eurasia tunnel was reported to have cost $1.3billion and is also expected to reduce the travel time between the two continents to just 15minutes.
