No less than 39 people have been killed and 70 others injured as a lone gunman opened fire at a night club in Istanbul on New Year's Eve.
The 'Reina Nightclub' which was packed with partiers is located at the shores of Istanbul's Bosphorus Waterway.
According to reports, a lot of people jumped into the Bosphorous waters in an attempt to save themselves after the gunman had opened fire just an hour into the New Year.
Security officers revealed that the attack was perpetrated by a lone gunman, however, other reports including those on social media suggest there might have been more than one attacker with one reported to have been wearing a Santa Claus costume which he ditched in order to escape.
According to 'Hurriyet Newspaper' who quoted witnesses, the attackers were reported to have shouted in Arabic before opening fire.
A certain, Sinem Uyanik said;
"We were having fun. All of a sudden people started to run. My husband said don’t be afraid, and he jumped on me. People ran over me. My husband was hit in three places. I managed to push through and get out, it was terrible".
Turkish Interior Minister, ‘Suleyman Soylu’ revealed that 15 of those killed were foreigners, adding that only 21 bodies had been identified. He also described the attack as a truly inhumane savagery.
"Our security forces have started the necessary operations. God willing, he will be caught in a short period of time".
The manhunt for the shooter is currently on-going as police have begun looking for the attacker who was reported to have left the murder weapon at the club and escaped during the chaos.
Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the terror attack, offering his condolences to those who lost loved ones including foreign guests.
What a horrible way to start the New Year in Turkey. Our condolences are with the families of the deceased.
