The South African Supreme Court of Appeal has more than doubled the prison sentence of Paralympic, Oscar Pistorius.
Pistorius killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, after shooting her four times through a locked bathroom door in his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013, claiming he mistook her for a burglar.
Pistorius’ 6-year jail sentence which was described by state prosecutors as “too lenient” has been increased to 13 years and 5 months, Guardian reports.
He was handed the 6-year sentence in July after a successful appeal by state prosecutors to upgrade his original conviction from culpable homicide to murder.
Guardian reports that Steenkamp’s family said the increased sentence confirms their trust in the justice system.
Speaking on the increased sentence, a spokeswoman for Oscar Pistorius late girlfriend’ family said:
“This is an emotional thing for them. They just feel that their trust in the justice system has been confirmed this morning.”
