2017 Lent begins today, March 1st with Ash Wednesday

The lent period has finally come and it begins today, the 1st day of March 2017 with the ‘Ash Wednesday’ and ends on Thursday, April 13th.

The Lenten season is a Christian tradition and the 2017 season starts off today March 1, 2017 with Ash Wednesday. It will last for 40 days until Easter.

This season reflects the period of fasting and suffering of our Jesus Christ in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, before he started his ministry.

The Holy Book of Christians, The Bible reveals that Christ was tempted by Satan during this time, but each time he managed to refuse his temptations.

This is a time when Christians are called to live the Christian life to the fullest and three things are required of us, which are FASTING, PRAYER and ALMS-GIVING.

This is also a time of serious sober reflection, when one is advised to look inward and change those vices or negative part of our lives while maintaining cordial and good relationship with neighbours as well as family.

One is being admonished that the Lenten life does not end after the season, it should be extended after lent and by doing this, the society becomes a better place to live in for everyone.

Happy Lent to all.
