The T-Mobile Arena on Saturday played host to one of the most anticipated fights of the year as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor went toe to toe for bragging rights with Mayweather emerging victorious after 10 rounds with the MMA champion.
The boxing bout which began with Mayweather as the favourite to emerge victorious saw McGregor kick off on a high note, throwing several punches in the first three rounds of the bout. The fight went on at a steady pace from the fourth round through to the eight with both fighters landing several shots at each other although McGregor was beginning to tire out.
However, during the 10th-round, the exhausted UFC Lightweight Champion lost his control as Mayweather began to land several punches on the Irishman with the referee eventually stopping the bout and declaring Mayweather the winner by TKO after McGregor found it difficult to defend himself again.
Floyd Mayweather's victory saw him extend his unbeaten run to 50 matches in what has been no doubt a stellar career.
The 40-year old lauded McGregor for his effort, describing the MMA champion as "a hell of a champion".
"He is a tough competitor and I thought we gave the fans what they wanted to see. He is a lot better than I thought he was, he used different angles and was a tough competitor but I was the better man tonight".
"Our game-plan was to take our time, let him shoot all his heavy shots early on and then take him down at the end, down the stretch".
"We know in the MMA he fights 25 minutes real hard and after that, he starts to slow down. I guaranteed this fight wouldn't go the distance. A win is a win".
McGregor also expressed his deepest respect for Mayweather, congratulating the boxer on his 50th victory.
The 29-year old who blamed fatigue for his loss added that he would have preferred it if he had seen the end of round 10 without the referee stopping the game.
"I took the early rounds fairly handy. I thought it was close, I thought the stoppage was a bit early, there was a lot on the line and I thought he should have let me carry on".
"I was just a little fatigued. He is composed and you have got to give it to him. I thought it was close. I get a little wobbly when I'm tired, it is fatigue, the referee could have let it keep going, let the man put me down. I am clear headed".
"Where were the final two rounds? Let me wobble to the corner and make him put me down. I've been strangled on live TV and came back. When you're in here in the squared circle, everything is different".
Mayweather who came out of retirement to fight McGregor has revealed it is high-time he bowed out of the sport as he announced his retirement again.
Stars stormed the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday to witness the fight between Mayweather and McGregor with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, LeBron James, Jamie Foxx, Nick Cannon, Don Cheadle, Bruce Willis, Alex Rodriguez, Mike Tyson and more all spotted in the crowd.
Congratulations to Mayweather on his 50th victory in as many games!
