The quarter-finals of the English Football League (EFL) Cup now known as the Carabao Cup saw one of the upsets of the season as Championship side, Bristol City knocked out Manchester United to advance to the semi-finals with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City picking up victories over their respective opponents to reach the last 4.
The quarterfinal round took place on Tuesday and Wednesday with Arsenal playing host to West Ham United; Manchester City travelling to Leicester City; Bristol City hosting Manchester United and Chelsea facing off against AFC Bournemouth.
Arsenal who had lost their last four EFL ties to teams in the English Premier League (EPL) were looking to put an end to that run when they hosted West Ham United at the ‘Emirates Stadium’ and duly delivered with a comfortable 1-0 victory over the Hammers. Danny Welbeck with the only goal of the game to send Arsene Wenger's side to the semi-finals.
Leicester City hosted in-form Manchester City at the ‘King Power Stadium’ with both sides looking to advance to the semifinal. However, City had to once again rely on Claudio Bravo's penalty-shootout heroics as the Chilean saved Riyad Mahrez's spot-kick to help Pep Guardiola's side reach the semi-finals after both sides played out a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.
Chelsea were looking to boost their chances of winning their first silverware of the season when they hosted AFC Bournemouth at the ‘Stamford Bridge’. A late goal from substitute, Alvaro Morata ensured the Blues would advance to the semifinal following a late rally by Bournemouth who equalized in the 90th-minute but conceded a minute later as Antonio Conte's side secured a 2-1 victory on the night.
The shocker of the quarterfinal round came at the 'Ashton Gate' where Championship side, Bristol City picked up an impressive 2-1 victory over defending champions, Manchester United. Korey Smith pounced on United's lapse in concentration in the last minute of stoppage time to send Bristol to the Carabao Cup semifinal.
The semi-final draw of the Carabao Cup sees Chelsea lock horns with Arsenal over two legs in a London Derby whereas Manchester City face off against Bristol City who knocked off their City rivals.
The first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 9th January 2018 with the return leg to take place on Tuesday, 23rd January 2018.
