Rafael Nadal wins record 10th French Open following victory over Stan Wawrinka

Rafael Nadal wrote his name in the history books on Sunday after winning a record 10th French Open following a victory over Stan Wawrinka in Paris, France.

The 31-year old took the sets 6-2 6-3 6-1 against the Swiss international who had been unbeaten in a major final in three previous appearances.

The Spaniard became the first man or woman in the Open era to win a Grand Slam tournament ten times.

Speaking after his victory, Nadal revealed that he could not describe the feeling of winning a record 10 French Open.

Nadal said;

"I play my best in all events but the feeling I have here is impossible to describe and you can't compare it. The nerves and adrenaline I feel on this court is impossible to compare. It's the most important event in my career".

Wawrinka who gave a solid effort but was outplayed by the Spaniard stated that Nadal was just too good to handle, adding that he was honored to have played the Spaniard in the final.

The 32-year old said;

"Rafa, I have nothing to say about today. You were too good. You are a great example and it's always been an honour to play against you. Congratulations on your career, to you and your team".

Nadal who claimed his fifteenth major title as well as secured his La Decima at Roland Garros also revealed that in 2005, he thought he would be fishing on a boat in Mallorca by 2017.

Nadal said;

"In 2005, I thought in 2017 I'd be fishing on my boat in Mallorca. I didn't really think I'd have such a long career and win so many tournaments".

"This tournament has been very special to me, and it's true that it is unprecedented. Trust me, I'm very happy that I'm the one who did it".

"If I can do it, someone else can do it. But you need the right circumstances, the right ingredients to win 10 French Open titles".

"I don't know if I will ever get to meet the player who will do better than I did".

Rafael Nadal has struggled to maintain his form and fitness since winning the French Open in 2014 but has been able to build his confidence this year and is back to winning ways.

Congratulations to Rafael Nadal!
